ECRL Trial Operations are officially underway, giving Malaysians their clearest look yet at what travelling on the East Coast Rail Link will feel like. Malaysia Rail Link Sdn Bhd (MRL) announced the start of the programme on 7 November, marking the final phase of operational readiness before commercial passenger services begin, targeted for 12 December 2026.

The very first train left Terminal Bersepadu Gombak at 7.00 am sharp and pulled into Kota Bharu at 10.58 am, completing the cross-peninsula journey in just under four hours.

What the ECRL Trial Operations Will Assess

The programme is conducted by ECRL Operation Sdn Bhd (EOSB), a 50:50 joint venture between MRL and China Communications Construction (ECRL) Sdn Bhd (CCCECRL), which operates and maintains the ECRL rail network.

Running from 7 November to 2 December 2026, it will assess operational readiness, service efficiency, station management and the passenger experience in a real operating environment. Trains will run between Gombak and Kota Bharu in both directions, covering both express and transit services.

The electric multiple unit (EMU) trains will follow the planned commercial passenger timetable throughout, complete with boarding passes and cabin crew services, so every trip mirrors what paying passengers can expect.

Inside the First Journey: 88 Minutes to Kuantan

The opening run of the ECRL Trial Operations carried 170 passengers and reached speeds of up to 160 km/h. It arrived at KotaSAS station in Kuantan, Pahang at 8.28 am, just 88 minutes after leaving Gombak.

Along the way, the train passed through multiple viaducts and tunnels, including the 16.39 km ECRL Genting Tunnel. The stretch through the hilly terrain between Gombak, Selangor and Bukit Tinggi, Pahang took a mere six minutes.

From Kuantan, the train continued north to Kuala Terengganu, arriving at 9.53 am, before terminating at Kota Bharu station at 10.58 am.

Built on a Successful Fault-Free Run

The ECRL Trial Operations follow the completion of key testing and commissioning stages, including the System Integration Test (SIT) and the successful Fault-Free Run (FFR) on 29 October 2026.

As of October 2026, construction of Phase 1 of the ECRL, covering the Kota Bharu–Gombak alignment, had reached 98.47% completion.

MRL: Every Journey Helps Us Prepare

“We know many Malaysians are looking forward to experiencing ECRL. The value of the railway will be felt in everyday journeys, whether they are travelling home to see family, travelling for work or education, or making journeys between the East Coast and the Klang Valley,” said MRL Chief Executive Officer Dato’ Sri Darwis Abdul Razak.

“As we begin Trial Operations,” he added, “our focus is to make sure the service is ready to offer a safe and reliable journey. Each journey gives us the opportunity to assess the passenger experience and operational arrangements ahead of opening to the public.”

Award Recognition and Fares From RM125

MRL was recently recognised with the Engineering Excellence in Transport award at the Transport Expo Asia (TXA) Awards 2026. It was also a finalist for the Minister’s Laureate for National Transport Leadership and Sustainable Transport Initiative of the Year.

Last month, the Cabinet approved an affordable and people-friendly ECRL fare structure based on a dynamic pricing mechanism, with Economy Class fares for the Gombak–Kota Bharu Transit service starting from RM125.

What’s Next Before the 12 December Launch

The 665-kilometre ECRL network will connect the East Coast states of Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang with Selangor on the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Once operational, it is expected to cut travel time between Kota Bharu and Gombak to approximately four hours, compared with around seven hours by road.

While the ECRL Trial Operations run until 2 December, MRL continues to prioritise system testing, certification and operational readiness to ensure the safe and timely commencement of commercial services.

Further information on ticket sales and passenger services will be announced through ECRL’s official channels in mid-November. For updates, visit www.ecrl.com.my or follow ECRL on Facebook and Instagram.
