The Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho: Mext), Japan’s Mext Scholarship 2022 for the Young Leaders’ Programme (YLP) is now open for application for Malaysians. This is a scholarship opportunity for Malaysians who seek to pursue their master’s degree studies in Japan.

What is provided in the Mext Scholarship?
According to the press release of the Japanese Embassy in Malaysia, the scholarship will include a monthly allowance of approximately RM8,828 (approximately 242,000 yen, subject to change).
Other than that, exemption of education fees including the entrance examination, matriculation as well as tuition at the universities are also included as a part of the scholarship.
As for travel expenses, a round-trip flight ticket will be provided.
Available master’s degree courses under the YLP of Mext Scholarship:
- Business Administration Course (Master of Business Administration) at Hitotsubashi University
- Law Course (Master of Law) at Kyushu Universit
- School of Government Course (Master in Public Administration or Master in Public Policy) at National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS)
- School of Local Governance Course (Master in Public Administration or Master in Public Policy) at National Graduate Institute for Foreign Policy (GRIPS)
- Healthcare Administration Course (Master of Healthcare Administration) at Nagoya University.
Language of the courses:
All courses will be conducted in English.
How long is the Mext Scholarship course?
The course duration is principally one year, from October 22 to September 2023. However, for Business Administration Course, it will commence from September 2022 to August 2023.
How to apply for the Japan’s Mext Scholarship?
For interested individuals, applications must be done through the recommending Malaysian authority. Each university has a different recommending authority, which you can find out here.
Application process:
October – December | Submit the application form to the respective Recommending Authorities by the due date. |
March – April 2022 | Interview. Only successful candidates will be notified to attend the interview. |
July 2022 | Notification of final result. |
September or October 2022 | Depart to Japan. |
Who is eligible?
The requirements for each course of the Mext Scholarship differ from one another. However, all courses require applicants to have at least some years of professional working experience in the field of the course.
