The chemistry teacher from SMK Ave Maria Convent Ipoh, received the recognition at a virtual ceremony hosted via the AKS Education Award’s official Facebook page and YouTube channel on Sunday (24 October 2021).

According to Komathy, 500 people from the 26,000 entries were shortlisted. Among them, there are only six Malaysian candidates in the list.

Thus, the 38-year-old teacher said she was shocked when she received the news about her victory via email on 29 September 2021.

Komathy is a passionate chemistry teacher

Komathy graduated with a master’s degree in Chemistry Education from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI). Currently, she is pursuing a doctoral degree in Chemistry Education at the same university.

Created interesting products to ease student’s learning

To pique students’ interest in chemistry, Komathy produced several innovative products to make the subject appears more interesting. Impressively, her products even received international recognition!

Chemistry is a less popular subject because it is full of formulas and involves a lot of calculations. So, we need to educate in an entertaining way so as to grab students’ interest in this subject and avoid them giving up easily.

said, Komathy.

Komathy said that the awards she received previously, including the Global Teacher Award 2021 would be a motivation to educate, produce a more advanced nation and continue making various innovations in the subject of chemistry.

Meanwhile, she has also produced several scholarly works. On top of that, Komathy has brought her students from SMK Buntong to represent Malaysia at both national and international levels in various academic events before.

When people say I am one of the inspirations to other teachers, I feel my inspiration comes from the students because it is towards their needs that I strive for excellence.
