Malaysia is looking for thousands of helping hands. Applications to become SEA Games 2027 volunteers open on 5 December, covering both the 34th SEA Games and the 2027 ASEAN Para Games. Organisers estimate that about 14,000 volunteers will be needed across the four SEA Games host clusters alone.
For Malaysians who want to be part of the region’s biggest multi-sport event on home soil, it is a chance to meet athletes, welcome visitors from across Southeast Asia and give back to the community. Here is what we know so far.
SEA Games 2027 Volunteers at a Glance
- Event: 34th SEA Games, 18 to 29 September 2027
- Host clusters: Kuala Lumpur, Sarawak, Johor and Penang
- ASEAN Para Games: 17 to 23 October 2027, Kuala Lumpur
- Organiser: Malaysia Organising Committee (MASOC)
- Volunteers needed: About 14,000 for the SEA Games and about 5,000 for the ASEAN Para Games
- Applications open: 5 December
5 Essential Things to Know Before You Apply
1. Where Volunteers Are Needed
Bernama reported that MASOC expects to need between 5,000 and 8,000 volunteers in Kuala Lumpur, 5,000 to 6,000 in Sarawak and about 2,000 in Penang. A figure for Johor has not been given yet.

“The total may reach about 14,000 people for all four SEA Games 2027 clusters,” said Datuk Abdul Rashid Yaakub, Chief Executive Officer of MASOC and the ASEAN Para Games 2027 Secretariat.
The ASEAN Para Games, held entirely in Kuala Lumpur, will need about 5,000 more.
2. Who Can Apply
The good news is that the call is wide open. MASOC said SEA Games 2027 volunteers can come from all age groups, and applicants from overseas are welcome too.
The organising committee is also reaching out to international students, particularly those who can speak the languages of participating countries. Visiting teams will appreciate a friendly face who can help in their own language, so multilingual Malaysians should take note too.
3. Para Games Roles Call for Extra Skills
Volunteering at the ASEAN Para Games is a little different. Abdul Rashid noted that volunteers there may need special skills and greater experience in supporting athletes with disabilities.
If you have a background in caregiving, physiotherapy, special education or disability support, this could be the place where your experience counts the most.
4. What SEA Games 2027 Volunteers Will Receive
MASOC said volunteers will receive clothing, and assistance with accommodation, food and transport throughout the Games is being considered, as reported by Malay Mail.
Final details on what each role includes are expected once applications open.
5. Get Ready Before 5 December
Interest is already building. MASOC said about 1,000 pre-registrations had been received through government-organised programmes, including MADANI Kita.
While the official application channel has not been announced yet, you can start preparing now:
- Pick your cluster. Choose the city nearest to you, since you may need to report for duty on multiple days.
- Know the sports. Organisers have finalised 473 events across 43 sports, Bernama reported, with padel to be held in the Kuala Lumpur cluster and dancesport in Sarawak. Athletes are gearing up too, as the SEA Games 2027 marathon qualification race shows.
- Check your calendar. The SEA Games run for 12 days in September 2027, and the Para Games follow in October. Think about leave from work or studies early.
- Follow official channels. Watch announcements from MASOC and the Ministry of Youth and Sports for the registration link.
Why SEA Games 2027 Volunteers Matter

Large sporting events depend on volunteers at almost every touchpoint, from guiding spectators and assisting media to supporting athletes behind the scenes. For many people, it is also a chance to build new skills, make friends across the region and say they were there when Malaysia hosted the Games.
“So, I invite everyone to join us as volunteers for the 2027 SEA Games and 2027 ASEAN Para Games,” said Abdul Rashid.
With four host clusters in Kuala Lumpur, Sarawak, Johor and Penang, there will be room for SEA Games 2027 volunteers from many communities to take part.
