As people are more aware of the environmental issues caused by the wide usage of plastic straws today, many cafes and restaurants are replacing plastic straws with metal straws as an effort. In fact, the coffee shop chain has introduced its edible rice straws months ago, but not many know that they are edible until recently, with the exposure of social media.
How does the edible rice straws from The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf taste like? Is it really edible?
According to a user of RED, a Chinese social media and e-commerce platform, the edible straw has a crunchy texture. After soaking it in your drinks, the straw will become softer but she doubts that people will finish eating it. The user shared her experience of the surprising discovery of the edible straw on her profile last month.
On the other hand, Azmey Zainal, an employee of The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf has shared a TikTok clip recently to clarify the edibility of the straw.
In the clip, Azmey explains that the straw is hard before soaking it into his drinks. He then takes a sip of his drink and bites the straw to prove that you can really eat it!
However, Azemy says that the straw is “edible but not recommended”. Most importantly, he adds that the straw is 100% made of rice. For people who is uncomfortable with eating it while it’s hard, he recommends soaking the straw in the drink for longer and it will turn into a jelly-ish texture.
Meanwhile, The Coffee Bean & Leaf has posted about its rice straws on its Facebook Page 3 months ago. It shares that the straw is biodegradable, edible and 100% turtle-friendly.
