Malaysians looking to improve their digital skills now have another opportunity to learn without paying course subscription fees. The Ministry of Digital, through MyDIGITAL Corporation, is providing free Coursera courses Malaysia-wide to 100,000 eligible Malaysians under the Rakyat Digital initiative.

The programme offers three months of complimentary access to more than 16,000 courses, including artificial intelligence (AI), data science, business and digital technology. It supports Malaysia’s wider goal of becoming an AI Nation by 2030.

100,000 Malaysians to Benefit From Digital Learning

Launched in phases from 16 September 2026, the government-funded Global Learning Pass allows Malaysians with a MyDigital ID to access Coursera’s online learning platform.

Participants can explore courses developed by universities and industry experts worldwide. The programme also includes hands-on Guided Projects and Professional Certificates designed to help learners develop practical skills.

The initiative comes as digital technology continues to change the workplace. According to the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025, around 41% of core skills in Malaysia are expected to change by 2030.

For working adults, graduates and jobseekers, access to digital skills training could help them prepare for new job requirements without the additional cost of a learning subscription.

Strong Early Response From Malaysian Learners

The programme has already attracted considerable interest.

Within its first three weeks, approximately 12,900 learners enrolled in 43,000 courses, according to figures shared by MyDIGITAL Corporation.

Participation has been particularly active in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Johor, Penang and Perak.

Among the most popular courses is Understanding Digital Transformation, a two-hour introductory programme developed by MyDIGITAL Corporation using Coursera’s Course Builder.

It introduces learners to technologies shaping Malaysia’s digital economy, including cloud computing, AI, machine learning, blockchain, the Internet of Things (IoT) and 5G.

Other popular courses include Google’s AI Fundamentals, Foundations: Data, Data, Everywhere and Foundations of Project Management.

These early enrolment patterns suggest that Malaysians are interested in practical skills that can be applied across different industries.

Supporting Malaysia’s AI Nation 2030 Vision

The Rakyat Digital initiative forms part of Malaysia’s efforts to strengthen digital literacy and prepare its workforce for an economy increasingly shaped by technology.

It supports the Malaysia Digital 2030 Action Plan (MD2030) and the National AI Action Plan 2026–2030.

Through its Awareness, Access and Adoption approach, Rakyat Digital aims to help Malaysians move beyond simply understanding technology towards using it in their daily lives, studies and workplaces.

Datuk Fabian Bigar, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Digital, said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to making digital education accessible across society.

“Our primary objective is to empower Malaysians with relevant skills so they can participate confidently and equitably in the digital economy,” he said.

Why Digital Skills Matter for Malaysia’s Workforce

As businesses adopt AI and digital tools, employees across different sectors may need to learn new ways of working.

Digital training is no longer relevant only to technology professionals. Skills in data analysis, project management and digital operations can also support workers in retail, manufacturing, finance and small businesses.

For Malaysia, making such learning opportunities more accessible could help reduce skills gaps while encouraging more people to participate in the digital economy.

The programme may also benefit smaller businesses that lack the resources to provide extensive employee training.

He highlighted the importance of providing Malaysians with access to skills and credentials that can help them adapt to changes in the workplace.

Free Coursera Courses Malaysia: How to Access the Programme

Malaysians interested in the Global Learning Pass can register through the official Rakyat Digital portal.

The programme is open to Malaysians with a MyDigital ID, with 100,000 licences being distributed in phases, subject to eligibility and availability.

Successful applicants receive three months of complimentary Coursera access.

Registration is available at https://www.rakyatdigital.gov.my.

Building a More Digitally Skilled Malaysia

Malaysia’s push towards becoming an AI Nation depends not only on technology investment but also on people having the skills to use it.

By opening access to digital learning, the Rakyat Digital and Coursera collaboration offers Malaysians a practical opportunity to develop new capabilities.

Its longer-term impact will depend on how learners apply those skills in their careers, businesses and communities.

For now, the initiative represents another step towards making digital education more accessible as Malaysia prepares for 2030.
