In celebration of World Earth Day, IKEA Malaysia has taken a bold step toward becoming a climate-positive retailer. On 22 April 2025, the company announced the commissioning of 2,668 rooftop solar panels at its flagship IKEA Damansara store. The installation, spanning 12,000 square meters, is expected to generate 2 MWh of renewable energy annually meeting up to 25% of the store’s electricity needs and cutting carbon emissions by 1,330 tonnes each year.
This milestone was officiated by YB Nik Nazmi bin Nik Ahmad, Malaysia’s Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, highlighting the importance of private-sector leadership in nation’s green transition.
Why This Matter for Malaysia’s Sustainable Future

The solar panel installation at IKEA Damansara is part of a broader commitment by IKEA Malaysia to reduce its carbon footprint. With this new addition, IKEA now operates over 20,437 solar panels across its Malaysian stores and centers, generating a combined 6.3 MWh of renewable energy per year.
“Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do,” said Malcolm Pruys, Country Retail Director of IKEA Malaysia. “This installation is another step toward becoming a fully climate-positive business. It shows that businesses can lead with purpose and act with impact.”
What IKEA Malaysia is Doing Beyond Solar

This isn’t IKEA Malaysia’s first step in building a greener business. The brand has made continuous investments in sustainable store operations, including:
- IKEA Cheras and IKEA Batu Kawan achieving both GBI Malaysia Gold and LEED Gold certifications.
- Transitioning to LED lighting in all stores.
- Phasing out single-use plastics.
- Expanding its electric vehicle delivery fleet as it aims for 100% sustainable transport for home deliveries by 2030.
These initiatives align with IKEA’s mission to enable Malaysians to live more sustainably at home through affordable, energy-efficient solutions.
A Positive Impact Starts with Action

In his keynote address, YB Nik Nazmi praised IKEA’s leadership stating, “The government cannot do this alone. This private sector is key to pushing Malaysia’s climate agenda forward. IKEA proves that sustainability and smart business can go hand in hand.”
IKEA’s move sends a clear message: achieving sustainability is possible with the right mindset and meaningful action.
