Kisona Selvaduray, national Malaysian shuttler, defeated Saina Nehwal in the women’s singles match during the Swiss Open recently. This is a shocking win even for Kisona herself as the match pitted the 64th-ranked shuttler against a former world number 1 champion in badminton.

Despite having been in poor form lately, the 23-year-old scored a win with stunning overall scores of 17–21, 21–13, 21–13. The Swiss Open 2022 marked the first World Tour quarter-finals for Kisona ever since her last appearance during the Orléans Masters 2018. Ever since losing the semi-final match against Akane Yamaguchi during Sudirman Cup 2021, she has been on the receiving end of racism attacks which eventually ended up affecting her performance up until now.

Get to Know Kisona Selvaduray

The promising Malaysian-Indian national shuttler was of Negeri Sembilan origins and is the youngest of four siblings. Kisona’s love for badminton is likely influenced by the rest of her family members who also possess great passions for the sport. She started recreationally playing badminton from the wee age of four years old and started training to become a professional player once she reached seven years old. She then went on to win both singles and doubles matches during a 2009 badminton tournament held by the Malaysia Schools Sports Council (MSSM) in Perlis. She made history with that win as she was a mere 10-year-old at the time, thus crowning her as the youngest champion in the whole history of the tournament.

This proves that talent and passion need to be nurtured and supported from a young age. There is no such thing as ‘too young’. Let’s all hope for nothing but the best for Kisona’s future.
