The third term for the 2021/2022 school session has been postponed to January 9, as announced by Minister of Education, Datuk Dr Radzi Jidin.
The initial plan for the school session reopening was supposed to be a week earlier, which is the 2nd and 3rd of January. This is due to the massive flood that had devastated several states in Malaysia. A total of 475 educational institutions nationwide have been either turned into Temporary Evacuation Centres (PPS) or have been submerged under floodwaters.
School session to open according to groups
Schools in states in Group A – namely Johor, Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu – would start on January 9. Meanwhile, those in Group B would start on January 10.
The ministry is always concerned about the difficulties faced by all parties including school management, teachers, students and parents affected by the floods.

Group | States | Opening date |
Group A | Johor, Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu | 9th January 2022 |
Group B | Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Putrajaya, Labuan, Sarawak, Sabah, Perlis, Penang, Perak, Pahang, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka | 10th January 2022 |
Previously, MOE announced that the third term will begin on 2 January till 20 March 2022 for group A and 3 January till 20 March 2022 for group B.
The academic calendar for the 2022/2023 school session will begin on 21 March 2022 until 11 and 12 March 2023.
However, the decision to postpone takes into account the current flood situation throughout the country which involves students, parents, and teachers indirect or directly. This also includes schools, which are either used for Temporary Evacuation Centres (PPS) or are severely affected by the flood.
In the meantime, Malaysian students can enjoy free 5G services while waiting for school to reopen.
