Penang is about to become the stage for one of Asia’s most talked-about artistic universes as Sim Chan brings his Infinite-land exhibition to Malaysian shores for the very first time. Hosted by Blank Canvas from 6–29 December, Infinite-land (Penang) marks a new chapter in the Hong Kong artist’s widely acclaimed series, which recently took Tainan by storm. This Malaysian edition doesn’t just travel, it transforms, coloured with the textures, symbols, and everyday quirks of local culture.
An Artistic Theme Park
Curator Kobe Ko describes the exhibition as a “theme-park-like dreamscape,” and that’s exactly what you’ll find.
Sim Chan expands Infinite-land into three signature series:
In Endlessness – Step into storyboxes that feel like portals. These 3D light sculptures use mirrored perspectives to create the illusion of infinite depth, so convincing you might forget where the walls end.
Wandering – This mobile light installation glides across the gallery, echoing the restless rhythm of urban life. It’s almost like the artwork is people-watching you.
WindowScape – A softer moment in the visual carnival, this light-painting series serves as a quiet portrait, an invitation to breathe, reflect, and take a personal pause.
But here’s where things get especially Penang-style fun: every visitor receives tokens. Yes, tokens! You’ll get to try your luck at claw machines and gacha machines for a chance to win actual pieces of the artist’s work. The interactive token booth, fashioned from an old pushcart, adds a nostalgic Malaysian wink to the experience.
And in a charming local twist, Sim Chan even enlisted Penangites to help complete certain details.
