Food that might otherwise go to waste could now reach more families in Penang through Semeja Harapan, a community initiative launched by Lotus’s Malaysia and Mutiara Food Bank (MFB).

Introduced on 8 October 2026 at Lotus’s Sungai Dua, the campaign aims to strengthen food assistance while encouraging businesses and the public to play a bigger role in reducing food waste.

Carrying the message “Lebihan Dikongsi, Harapan Disemai”, Semeja Harapan builds on a partnership that has been helping communities since 2017.

Building on Years of Food Rescue Efforts

The collaboration between Lotus’s Malaysia and Mutiara Food Bank is not new. The retailer has supported the Penang State food bank initiative since its establishment in 2017, helping recover safe, edible surplus food for families in need.

The latest campaign brings food recovery, public donations and community distribution together under one programme.

Lotus’s Malaysia has also recorded significant progress in its wider food rescue efforts.

According to Azliza Baizura Azmel, Executive Director of Corporate Services at Lotus’s Malaysia, the company has redirected 2.421 million kilogrammes of food from landfills to more than 120,000 families since 2016.

The figures show how surplus food recovery can help address two challenges at once: food waste and access to essential meals.

Making Food Donations Easier for Malaysians

One of the campaign’s main goals is to make community giving more accessible.

Participating Lotus’s stores will introduce dedicated donation points where customers can contribute suitable shelf-stable food and essential items.

Instead of relying only on surplus food from retailers, the programme will create another way for shoppers to support households facing financial difficulties.

Mutiara Food Bank will manage collection, distribution and coordination with beneficiaries. Lotus’s will provide support through its stores, food contributions and customer donation spaces.

The initial rollout is proposed to cover seven Lotus’s outlets in Penang, beginning with Lotus’s Sungai Dua.

Both organisations will also explore targeted food drives based on community needs.

Supporting Penang’s Lower-Income Households

Food assistance remains important even as Penang makes progress in addressing poverty.

At the campaign launch, Penang State Executive Councillor for Social Development, Welfare and Non-Islamic Religious Affairs, YB Lim Siew Khim, highlighted the need for continued support.

As of 30 September 2026, Penang recorded 11,105 households under the poor category in the eKasih database, despite having zero registered hardcore poor heads of households.

These figures underline why community support programmes remain relevant.

Mutiara Food Bank currently serves communities across all 40 state constituencies in Penang. The organisation has rescued and redistributed more than 2,000 tonnes of surplus food through partnerships with supermarkets, businesses and other contributors.

Through Semeja Harapan, the state hopes to strengthen coordination with relevant agencies and reach more households requiring assistance.

A Shared Commitment to Reducing Food Waste

Beyond providing food assistance, the initiative highlights the value of stronger cooperation between retailers, community organisations and the public.

Food rescue helps prevent usable food from being discarded while directing resources towards households that need them.

For businesses, such partnerships also offer a practical way to support environmental and social responsibility efforts.

Damien Foong, Chief Operating Officer of Mutiara Food Bank, said the campaign reflects the organisation’s guiding principle, “Saving Food, Feeding Lives”, and its mission of “No One Goes Hungry.”

The organisation hopes more businesses and community members will join the effort as the programme develops.

Creating Wider Community Impact

The campaign could also help strengthen how food assistance is organised across Penang.

By tracking recovered food, public donations and the number of beneficiaries reached, both partners aim to better understand the programme’s impact.

This approach may help identify areas where assistance is most needed and guide future food distribution activities.

Existing food rescue operations already involve Lotus’s Bagan Ajam, Bukit Mertajam and Kulim. The new campaign offers an opportunity to build on these efforts while increasing public participation.

Towards a More Caring and Sustainable Penang

Semeja Harapan shows how an established partnership can grow into a wider community effort.

As more businesses and residents take part, the campaign has the potential to reduce food waste and improve access to food assistance.

For families facing daily financial pressures, even a small contribution can make a meaningful difference.

The next step will be turning that community support into lasting help for households across Penang.
