More than 2,000 residents of Kampung Chuchoh Puteri A, Kelantan, now have access to a more stable clean water supply following the completion of a community project by Zurich General Takaful Malaysia Berhad (Zurich Takaful) and Islamic Aid Malaysia (IAM).
The Clean Water for the Community Program, funded through Zurich Takaful’s Corporate Zakat Responsibility programme, was developed to address a long-running water supply problem that had affected daily life and livelihoods in the village.
Ending Decades of Water Supply Challenges
For more than 30 years, residents depended on a gravity-fed system that carried water from a nearby stream. The supply was used for drinking, cooking and washing, as well as farming, livestock and crop cultivation.
As the village grew, however, the old system struggled to meet demand. Low pressure, ageing pipes and a limited catchment area resulted in disruptions, particularly during dry periods when water sometimes failed to reach homes.
The problem also affected residents who depend on agriculture as a source of income, making a more reliable system important for both household needs and local livelihoods.
New System Improves Access to Clean Water
The completed project includes improvements to the existing water intake structure and nearly five kilometres of upgraded piping connecting the source, storage tanks and main distribution network.
Two 3,000-gallon HDPE tanks have also been installed alongside a membrane-based filtration system and a new pump house. Together, these upgrades help provide treated water more consistently to the community.
The benefits extend beyond households. The improved supply also serves the village mosque, childcare centre, community centre and several madrasahs.
Supporting Daily Life and Local Livelihoods

A reliable water supply can make a major difference in a rural community where agriculture remains an important source of income.
Zurich Takaful Chairman Dato’ Wan Mohd Fadzmi Che Wan Othman Fadzilah said access to clean water has a direct impact on health, wellbeing and everyday life. He added that the facility can also support farming activities that residents depend on.
Islamic Aid Malaysia President Zawahir Abdullah said the project demonstrates how access to basic facilities can support better quality of life and longer-term community development.
Work on the project began in early June and was completed in August, with local residents also contributing through community cooperation.
Building Stronger Rural Communities
The initiative shows how partnerships between businesses, humanitarian organisations and local communities can address practical needs at the grassroots level.
For Kampung Chuchoh Puteri A, the new system is more than an infrastructure upgrade. A stable supply of clean water can support healthier households, community facilities and more reliable farming activities.
With more than 2,000 residents expected to benefit, the project represents a practical step towards improving everyday living conditions and strengthening community resilience in rural Kelantan.
