Being a considerate guest is more than good manners for many Malaysians, it is simply part of everyday life. A new survey commissioned by Airbnb shows that these values continue even while travelling, with most Malaysians making an effort to respect hosts, neighbours and local communities during their homestay stays.
The survey, conducted by YouGov among 1,000 Malaysians who stayed in a homestay within the past year, found that respectful behaviour is deeply rooted in local culture. From keeping noise levels low to cleaning up before checkout, many travellers say these habits are simply “common sense.”
Respect and Responsibility Come Naturally
According to the survey, 85% of Malaysians believe being a respectful homestay guest is highly important, while four in five say they feel a responsibility towards the surrounding community during their stay.
Many respondents said their behaviour is driven by personal values, respect for their hosts and simple common sense. The findings also show that 82% would feel guilty if their actions disturbed neighbours, reflecting the strong emphasis Malaysians place on consideration and courtesy.
Going Beyond Basic House Rules
The survey found that many Malaysians do more than simply follow accommodation guidelines.
Around two-thirds of guests said they treat homestays as they would their own homes by washing dishes, taking out rubbish and tidying up before leaving. Some even go a step further by leaving thank-you notes, watering plants or cleaning areas beyond what they used during their stay.
In addition, 77% of respondents said they check house rules before or at the start of their stay to ensure they understand the expectations of their hosts.
Even the Durian Dilemma Has a Polite Solution

Malaysia’s famous durian season provided an interesting example of thoughtful travel behaviour.
Nearly eight in 10 respondents said they would either ask permission before bringing durian into a shared property, enjoy it outside or avoid bringing it altogether. Rather than relying on written rules, many travellers simply choose the option that avoids inconveniencing others.
The survey suggests these everyday decisions reflect broader Malaysian values of respect, empathy and social awareness.
Homestays Continue to Grow in Popularity
Homestays have become an increasingly popular accommodation choice for domestic travel.
Among survey respondents, 60% cited better value for money as the main reason for choosing homestays, while many also appreciated home-style amenities such as kitchens and laundry facilities, along with the ability to stay together as families or groups.
The survey also found growing acceptance of home-sharing within local communities. Among respondents living near short-term rentals, 96% said they had no objections, with 71% comfortable having one in their own neighbourhood.
Strong Guest Behaviour Benefits Everyone

Airbnb’s internal data supports the survey findings.
Between March 2025 and March 2026, more than 97% of Airbnb stays in Malaysia were completed without any complaints or reported issues. At the same time, listings recognised as Guest Favourite properties grew by more than 40% over the past two years, reflecting consistently positive guest experiences.
According to Airbnb, respectful travel benefits not only guests and hosts but also the communities that welcome visitors.
Encouraging Responsible Tourism
To promote positive travel experiences, Airbnb has introduced a Good Guest Guide that offers practical tips for travellers on respecting local customs, neighbourhoods and community expectations.
The guide complements Airbnb’s existing safety measures, including reservation screening technology, its global disruptive party ban and responsible hosting resources. Beginning August 2026, the guide will also be shared with first-time guests booking stays in Malaysia.
Travel That Respects Communities
As domestic tourism continues to grow, responsible travel plays an important role in supporting local communities, preserving neighbourhood harmony and creating better experiences for everyone. RiseMalaysia celebrates initiatives that encourage thoughtful travel while strengthening Malaysia’s tourism industry and community connections.
