While Indonesia ranked as the most desired scuba destination overall, Malaysia placed their own waters at the top, choosing Malaysia ahead of hotspot like Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines.
Why Do Diver Dive? It’s Not Just the Scenery
According to the survey, which polled scuba enthusiasts across 11 Asian countries, diving is more than just a sport, it’s a source of relaxation and escape. About 30% of divers listed stress relief as their main reason for diving, while 24% are dawn to marine life and the thrill of underwater exploration.
Scuba Lovers Spend More and Stay Shorter

While affordability is still the biggest factor when booking a diving trip, divers are happy to spend more once they dive in, in fact 40% of respondents said they spend 15-30% more on scuba trips compared to regular vacations.
As for how long do they stay? Most prefer short getaways. About 48% opt for 4-7 day trips, with 41% choosing quick weekend dives. These compact trips allow for immersive experiences without taking too much time off.
Reef Diving Remains the Top Choice
When it comes to underwater locations, reef diving takes the crown. A massive 75% of divers prefer exploring vibrant coral reefs and colorful marine ecosystems. Asia’s rich reef system, especially in Southeast Asia, continues to rank high on the must-dive list for marine enthusiasts.
