The Food Compost initiative aligns seamlessly with these goals, providing a targeted and effective approach to managing food waste. Transforming Waste Into Resources With Pavilion REIT Malls
Pavilion REIT malls—comprising Pavilion Kuala Lumpur Mall, Intermark Mall, and Pavilion Bukit Jalil—have initiated the daily collection of food waste from their supermarkets, food courts, and F&B outlets. This proactive step underscores the organization’s commitment to environmental responsibility and sets a positive example for waste management in the real estate investment sector.
At the core of this green initiative lies the Food Compost machine, a revolutionary technology converting 1,000kg (1 tonne) of food waste into 200kg of nutrient-rich organic fertilizer suitable for all plants, along with an impressive 800 liters of water daily. This process not only diverts waste from landfills but also adheres to circular economy principles, showcasing Pavilion REIT’s dedication to sustainable practices.
The self-sustainable Food Compost machine is powered by solar panels strategically installed above it. The water produced serves a dual purpose, efficiently cleaning the loading bay driveway and watering nearby plants. This integrated approach ensures a closed-loop system, completing the cycle of converting food waste into valuable resources. Additionally, a water harvesting tank for the Air Handling Unit (AHU) collects AHU water and rainwater, specifically earmarked for cleaning the loading bay driveway, solidifying Pavilion REIT’s comprehensive commitment to water conservation.

As a responsible corporate citizen, we recognise the need to address food waste challenges and contribute to a sustainable future. Through this initiative, in a year, we estimate Pavilion REIT malls to collectively prevent 365,000kg of food waste landing in landfills and instead produce 73,000kg organic fertiliser and 292,000litres of water.
