In Malaysia, individuals suffering from heart disease are becoming more alarmingly younger. Statistics show that 7.6 million adults are affected by high cholesterol, with cases rising among those as young as 25. This poses serious public health risks, leading to long-term damage and increasing the likelihood of heart attacks and strokes.
To address this issue, one of the largest medical institutions in Malaysia, Institut Jantung Negara (IJN) hosted a public forum entitled “30s and Thriving: Prioritize Heart Health Early” in preparation for World Heart Day on 29th September.
Growing Risks Of High Cholesterol And Heart Disease
Moderated by Dr Rowina Lynne, a Clinical Cardiologist at IJN, the forum featured insights from IJN experts. From a cardiologist, physiotherapist, and dietitian, the forum focused on the growing risks of high cholesterol and heart disease among young adults. Additionally, TV personality and celebrity chef Ili Sulaiman provided her lived experience of heart disease as a young adult living in Malaysia.
As part of the IJN World Heart Day 2024 campaign under the theme “Neon Sparks, Healthy Heart Embarks”, the forum sought to spread awareness of the rise of high cholesterol. At its core, the event aimed to make conscious of cardiovascular health issues among young adults in their 30s and 40s.
Commitment To Heart Health
Chief Executive Officer of IJN, Prof. Dato’ Sri Dr Mohamed Ezani Md Taib highlighted the institute’s unwavering dedication to elevating Malaysians’ heart health. As he expressed:
At IJN, we are dedicated to providing exceptional cardiovascular care and bridging the gap between the public and healthcare. These initiatives, like today’s forum, reflect our broader mission to instill a sense of urgency, especially among younger adults, to take charge of their heart health and see their doctors for regular screenings.

Understanding Cholesterol And Heart Disease
Focusing on essential heart health topics, the open forum provided valuable insights into cholesterol levels, risk factors, and preventive measures for heart disease. The audience learned the importance of recognizing warning signs and how early medical intervention can greatly improve a patient’s health and quality of life.
Senior Consultant Cardiologist of IJN, Datuk Dr Ahmad Khairuddin, shared alarming statistics from the National Health & Morbidity Survey 2023. He stated:
High cholesterol is a major risk factor for sudden heart attacks and strokes. According to the National Health & Morbidity Survey 2023, 7.6 million adults have high cholesterol in Malaysia, and it’s increasingly affecting individuals aged 25-29, putting them at a heightened risk for heart disease.
Datuk Dr Ahmad Khairuddin, IJN Senior Consultant Cardiologist
The audience also learned the personal experience of Ili Sulaiman as she shared about suffering a heart attack at the age of 38. She spoke:
I was only 38 years old when I had a heart attack. In retrospect, there were warning signs, such as regular inflammation and high-stress levels, that I overlooked prior. As a mother and wife, my health has now become a top priority so I can be there for my family. I urge everyone, especially those in their 30s, to get checked for high cholesterol and protect your heart today.
