Dr. Muharam Awang, a 79-year-old senior citizen, defied age and health challenges to attain a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Malay Literature from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM).

Dr. Muharam’s journey to academic excellence was not without its hurdles. Battling blurred vision caused by cataracts, he faced a significant obstacle to his scholarly pursuits. Undeterred, he sought assistance from his children to navigate through the intricacies of his research thesis. This collaborative effort became pivotal in his quest for knowledge and academic achievement.
Under the mentorship of Dr. Zubir Idris, a Senior Lecturer at the Malay Language, Literature, and Culture Studies Center at UKM, Dr. Muharam found the support and guidance essential for his academic journey. Dr. Zubir’s expertise and encouragement provided a compass through the complexities of academic research, propelling Dr. Muharam towards his academic goals.

From 2015 to 2023, Dr. Muharam embarked on his PhD odyssey, driven by a thirst for personal satisfaction and a desire to overcome past feelings of inadequacy experienced during his teaching career. Despite the challenges posed by his advanced age and health concerns, his unwavering determination and love for knowledge fueled his progress.

Dr. Muharam’s perseverance culminated in a momentous occasion during the 51st UKM Convocation Ceremony held from 25 to 30 November 2023. Among 7,255 graduates conferred with degrees and diplomas, Dr. Muharam Awang stood tall as he was awarded the prestigious PhD scroll in Malay Literature—a testament to his indomitable spirit and commitment to lifelong learning.
