If the internet had a heartbeat, 2025 would be the year it skipped several beats. From live football matches to AI-powered workloads running behind the scenes, the world’s appetite for data has never been bigger, or faster. According to new figures from DE-CIX, global internet traffic hit unprecedented levels last year, painting a vivid picture of how deeply digital connectivity is now woven into everyday life.
Global Internet Traffic Hits An All-Time High In 2025
In 2025, global internet traffic across DE-CIX’s worldwide Internet Exchange platforms reached 79 exabytes, marking a year-on-year increase of roughly 15–16 percent and more than double the volume recorded in 2020. To put that scale into perspective, it is equivalent to streaming a football match in full HD continuously for 2.2 million years.
This growth was fuelled by a powerful mix of factors: high-demand live streaming, expanding AI workloads, billions of connected devices, and the continued rise of hybrid and remote work. The data underscores a clear reality: digital infrastructure is now a critical utility, not a background service.
Southeast Asia’s Digital Momentum Gains Real Weight
Southeast Asia emerged as one of the fastest-maturing regions in the global data ecosystem. While earlier years focused on infrastructure expansion, 2025 reflected stronger utilisation across the region. Traffic on the DE-CIX Southeast Asia platform grew sharply, signalling rising digital demand across markets such as Singapore, Johor Bahru and beyond.
Malaysia, in particular, maintained steady traffic levels at 93 petabytes, reinforcing its role as a stable and reliable interconnection hub as the region prepares for future cloud and AI-driven growth. This consistency positions the country as a key supporting pillar in Southeast Asia’s evolving digital economy.
A Traffic Surge Like No Other
The busiest day of the year arrived on 9 December 2025, driven by a packed UEFA Champions League matchday featuring clubs such as Barcelona, Liverpool and Inter Milan. At its peak, global internet traffic surged to 26.99 terabits per second, a volume so large that printing just one second of data would create a paper stack 21 times taller than Mount Everest.
DE-CIX Frankfurt alone set a new all-time record of 18.73 Tbit/s, highlighting how major live events continue to reshape internet usage patterns worldwide.
Why These Numbers Matter For The Connected World
Behind the impressive statistics lies a clear message: the digital world is scaling faster than ever. As streaming, gaming, AI applications and global events collide online, resilient and high-capacity interconnection infrastructure has become essential to keeping the internet fast, stable and secure.
With global internet traffic continuing its upward trajectory, 2025 may be remembered as the year the internet proved just how much the world depends on it, every second, everywhere.
