Malaysians are increasingly managing payments and other financial needs through digital platforms. Now, that same everyday access is being extended to longer-term savings and life protection.
Zurich Life Insurance Malaysia Berhad (ZLIMB) has partnered with ShopeePay Malaysia, marking ShopeePay’s first digital distribution partnership with the life insurer. The collaboration also brings the Zurich Savings & Protection Plan to the ShopeePay app.
The move reflects a wider shift in Malaysia’s digital economy. Financial services are becoming more closely integrated with platforms that consumers already use, potentially lowering some of the practical barriers to getting financial protection.
Building Protection Into Everyday Digital Platforms
The partnership expands an existing relationship between ShopeePay and Zurich’s general insurance and general takaful businesses.
For consumers, the main change is access. Instead of relying only on conventional insurance distribution channels, eligible ShopeePay users can explore a savings and protection product within a familiar digital environment.
Alain Yee, Head of ShopeePay Malaysia, said the addition of ZLIMB products is intended to make it easier for Malaysians to take practical steps towards strengthening their financial future. The companies also plan to expand their protection offerings with Zurich Takaful Malaysia Berhad in the coming year.
This digital distribution approach matters because accessibility remains an important part of financial inclusion. Making protection easier to understand and reach does not replace the need for informed financial decisions, but it can give more consumers an entry point.

Savings and Life Protection in One Plan
The Zurich Savings & Protection Plan is a two-year, single-premium product combining savings with life and disability protection.
It currently starts from RM500, although Zurich and ShopeePay said the entry premium is expected to be lowered to RM100 in the future.
Key features outlined by the companies include:
- Guaranteed cash payouts every six months
- Life and disability protection providing beneficiaries 105% of the premium paid
- 100% principal protection at maturity after two years
- Flexible early cash-out options
Users can access the product through the ShopeePay app by selecting Insurance, followed by Endowment. The stated benefits are subject to the plan’s applicable terms and conditions.
Digital Distribution Could Broaden Financial Access
The bigger story is not simply the launch of another insurance product. It is how financial services are moving closer to consumers through digital ecosystems.
Junior Cho, Country CEO of Zurich Malaysia, said addressing Malaysia’s protection gap requires providers to meet consumers on platforms they already use. He added that the new plan complements Zurich Critical Illness insurance already available through the digital ecosystem.
For Malaysia’s fintech and insurance sectors, such partnerships show how payment platforms can develop beyond transactions. They can become gateways to a wider range of regulated financial products.
That may also encourage insurers to rethink distribution, particularly when trying to reach digitally active consumers who may have limited engagement with traditional insurance channels.

More Financial Options Through Digital Channels
Zurich and ShopeePay plan to extend the collaboration further. Family takaful products are expected to join the digital offering next year, giving users access to Syariah-compliant protection options.
The development comes as digital payments become a routine part of Malaysian life. Connecting those platforms with savings and protection products could make basic financial planning more accessible, especially if entry costs continue to fall.
Still, accessibility is only part of the equation. Consumers need clear product information and should understand benefits, conditions and early withdrawal implications before committing their money.
What This Means for Malaysia
For the public, the partnership offers another route to savings and financial protection without requiring a separate offline process.
For the industry, it highlights the growing connection between fintech platforms and established financial institutions. That combination can help traditional providers reach consumers through simpler digital journeys while allowing payment platforms to broaden the financial services available within their ecosystems.
Over time, partnerships of this kind could support wider financial participation in Malaysia. The real measure of progress will be whether digital convenience translates into better understanding, stronger protection and more sustainable saving habits.
Conclusion
The Zurich-ShopeePay partnership shows how Malaysia’s digital financial ecosystem is moving beyond payments.
By bringing savings and life protection into a widely used digital platform, the collaboration could make financial protection easier to access. With a lower entry premium planned and family takaful expected to follow, the model may also open the door to a broader group of consumers.
