In celebration of Merdeka Day, the Muslim marriage app Muzz launched its first regional #MerdekaDari campaign in Indonesia and Malaysia. The campaign showcases unconventional single Muslims overcoming fears and societal pressures regarding marriage.
The Struggles in Southeast Asia
Marriage is not just about the couple, but also about the family, which puts a heavy burden on their children. In Southeast Asia, most parents expect their children to own a house, a car, be financially stable, and get married. This traditional trajectory is becoming less relevant in today’s world due to economic challenges.
Additionally, societal pressures become another burden when finding a partner. Many Southeast Asian women have become more career-driven, highly educated, and financially independent, which are positive qualities but may be less attractive to some men.
Muzz Empowers Unconventional Singles
The #MerdekaDari campaign aims to shed light on “unconventional” single Muslims in Indonesia and Malaysia who struggle to find love. It features a documentary-style video focusing on societal issues that are considered taboo and difficult to discuss in society.
The campaign highlights the stories of six individuals facing different struggles:
- Qila (Malaysia): A 36-year-old recently divorced single mother from Kota Belud, Sabah, who fears being judged by society.
- Reza (Malaysia): A 37-year-old single father with two young daughters struggling with his own trauma from past relationship failures.
- Suri (Malaysia): Married and divorced at a very young age, she wants to be able to trust again.
- Kristina (Indonesia): A revert by choice struggling to find someone who accepts her for who she is, and shares the same faith.
- Rida (Indonesia): A 40-year-old single mother who wants to make her own decisions for herself and her son.
By showcasing these individuals and their struggles, Muzz aims to empower people who feel alone in their struggles and help them overcome their fears surrounding marriage. As we celebrate the spirit of Merdeka, it’s important to listen to our people free of judgement.
The #MerdekaDari campaign will be running until September 16, 2024, which is Malaysia Day. You can watch the full documentary video here.
