While YouTube undoubtedly comes in second to Google as the most popular search engine in the world, TikTok is currently known as a search engine for Gen Z-ers in addition to being an entertainment platform. Although pop music and viral dancing videos are what TikTok is famous for, the video app is also becoming more and more of a search engine for Generation Z.
TikTok Is The New Google
And that is according to the current generation. This is not especially shocking; the internet is simply becoming a more visual medium. Here are some justifications to their claim.
1. Short Attention Spans

No offense to the Gen Z-ers, but they are quite infamous for having a short attention span. The contributing factor might be their habit of entertaining short videos for a prolonged period of time. This is to the point that their brain is accustomed to the habit. It makes it hard for them to concentrate on long videos. Hence the reason why they prefer TikTok, and since information can also be accessed through TikTok, why bother using Google anymore?
2. Unsatisfactory Google Results

Generally, users do not have to waste their time grudgingly reading through paragraphs of text or clicking on questionable-looking websites when they seek information. Instead, users are immediately pointed in the direction of pertinent in-app material that can quickly address their issues or answer their questions. Plus, it is usually answered in video form, which can be easily understood, and well, no reading required. Sounds fun.
3. Visual Learning Styles

TikTok has the advantage over Google that it is a one-stop shop for both entertainment and search, which is a subtle but immensely significant advantage. The ‘pain’ of having to quit one app and open another in order to conduct a search is bothersome. That is entirely invalidated by TikTok. We have videos available if you want to watch them. We also have a search function if you wish to look for something.
Gen Z are simple creatures. Reading might be their last option, but that does not mean they would not read if the situation needs them to do so. But if there are options of watching instead of reading, they will opt for that one. TikTok is a relative newcomer in the world of search engines. Isn’t that an advantage that should not be wasted?
