With the ongoing monsoon season in Malaysia, there have been many cases of landslides that have caused inconvenience and even some unfortunate casualties in the country. Victims had to face the sudden natural disaster without any warning or preparation. Therefore, according to Minister Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan, the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources will install more landslide early warning systems at landslide-prone areas.
The system would alert residents in affected areas to be prepared for future landslides. Takiyuddin talked to reporters on the matter after the SPM/STAM/STPM 2020 Examination Excellence Incentive Presentation Ceremony on Sunday (5 Dec), as reported in Bernama.

In an effort to create more awareness of the occurrence of landslides, the minister said that the government would create an awareness campaign so that people would be on the alert on the matter.
According to him, the Mineral and Geoscience Department (JMG) is also monitoring the situation closely.
He also explained that the system will be available not only in landslide-prone areas but also in some unoccupied areas as prevention.
The system will be also installed in unoccupied areas such as Gunung Jerai, Kedah because there is a possibility of landslides due to climate change.

Preventing unanticipated incidents
The installation of the early warning system is said to be able to prevent unforeseen incidents.
With the system and awareness, this is part of the government’s pro-active efforts in tackling the issue.

Meanwhile, the minister said that the system has been installed in several states. Sabah, Kedah, and highland areas such as Cameron Highlands are equipped with the alert system to face the disaster.
