Modern train stations in Malaysia may look the same but old train stations in Malaysia stand out for their unique designs. These stations are rare as they symbolize the country’s colonial heritage. In fact, only a few of the old stations remained today. Most of them are demolished and some are fortunately retained for other purposes. Here is a list of beautiful railway stations in Malaysia.

Kuala Lumpur Railway Station
The Kuala Lumpur Railway Station is the most distinctive colonial building in the city. Before the Petronas Twin Tower was built, the railway station is the most famous landmark of Kuala Lumpur. It was also once the city’s main train station (now KL Sentral).
The Malaysian capital’s station has a combination of Eastern and Western designs with Mughal features. It was designed by a British Architectural Assistant to the Director of Public Works, Arthur Benison Hubback. Hubback is also the designer of 25 other buildings in Malaysia. Today, more than half of his creations are still considered national treasures.
The construction of this white building began at the beginning of the 20th century and was completed in 1910. Moreover, Kuala Lumpur’s Railway Station was ranked No. 4 among 26 other train stations as the world’s most beautiful train stations by Architectural Digest.
Today, the Kuala Lumpur railway station is still operating as a train station and is a must-stop destination for tourists.
Ipoh Railway Station
Also designed by Arthur Benison Hubback, the Ipoh Railway Station was completed in 1917. Located on the south-western side of Ipoh, Perak, the station is renowned for its British-style architecture. It is a popular spot for photography including a wedding photoshoot! Just like the Kuala Lumpur railway station, this station is still operating today and people who arrive at Ipoh can casually admire the beauty of this building.
Alor Setar Railway Station (now transformed into a restaurant)
The colonial railway station in Alor Setar boasts its distinctive clock tower and is an iconic location in the state. However, the old station had ceased operation as a train station. The building has since transformed into a Railway Tavern restaurant and bar that offers a good vibe to chill at, which is fortunate as we will still be able to see and visit this old building.
Now, the Anak Bukit railway station is the new main station in Alor Setar, Kedah. Although it is a new building, it is built with Moorish features similar to the famous Kuala Lumpur and Ipoh railway stations.
Johor Bahru Railway Station
The Johor Bahru railway station stands more than 90 years in Malaysia and has been serving as an important transportation point in Johor Bahru. It ceased its operation in 2010 and is reported to be transforming into the first-ever train museum in Malaysia. However, after repainting the building into blue and yellow, there is no news about the opening of the museum yet up to date.
